Parenting Through Divorce/Separation Workshop
Hearts & Homes provides a 2 ½ hour educational workshop for parents who are experiencing divorce or separation. Research in the field is very clear that children do much better when their parents participate in educational programs which are designed to ease families through the transition of divorce. The overall goals are to reduce conflict, increase communication, and support children’s needs. The curriculum stresses the importance of the child’s experience of separation and divorce as well as provides educational skills necessary for co-parenting. It is drawn from the Kids’ Turn Program®.
The workshop covers how to interact with the child's other parent constructively, how to help the child cope with the family changes and challenges, and how to focus on problem solving. Parents learn about the effects of divorce on children and are given specific strategies to help their children adjust successfully. Sessions focus on the child’s experience of the separation. Handouts, booklists and website lists are provided to encourage parents to cover topics in greater depth using self-help materials.
During the workshop, parents learn about:
The workshops are facilitated by experienced mental health practitioners and teachers who have expertise working with families. Workshops are held once or twice a month at the Hearts and Homes. Participants who complete the workshop are provided with an attendance certificate which is accepted by the courts.
Parents are referred by courts, attorneys, counselors, and human service providers. Self-referrals who believe they could benefit from the workshops are also welcome to attend. Divorcing and separating parents may NOT both attend the same workshop. Program fees are based on a sliding scale and must be made before the session.
