17 to ZERO Project

Picture
In the U.S., we lose 17 veterans to suicide every day. To raise awareness and honor the lives lost, MSU Veteran Services and the Help Center co-host the 17 to Zero Project: Communities Engaging to End Veteran Suicide. The goal is to continue decreasing rates of veteran suicide by informing and empowering those ACROSS MONTANA to reduce stigma, help veterans access mental health services, and keep the conversation about veteran mental health and well-being at the forefront. Montana is home to one of the highest per capita veteran populations in the country, and a large portion of those veterans live right here in the Gallatin Valley.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2022 17 to ZERO Event:

MSU Travis W. Atkins Veterans Support Center

When student veterans face a mental health crisis, access to care and timing is crucial. When the Veteran Support Center finds out a student is in need of mental health counseling,  staff move immediately to remove all barriers to access. The most effective strategy is to bring students to Counseling & Psychological Services (CPS) on campus to meet with a dedicated mental health counselor. The funding to have a dedicated mental health professional on campus saves lives through timely, effective intervention.

Help Center

The Help Center has been in Bozeman since 1971 and serves Gallatin and the surrounding 12 counties. They are available 24/7 (406-586-3333) to help anyone in crisis, suicidal or is concerned about someone in their life. They are a critical community resource, as a crisis can occur at any time. They also provide crisis walk-in services and referrals to community and mental health resources. They are one of two crisis centers in the state that answers the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK). Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Montana and Montana has remained in the top 5 states for suicide rates in the country for many years.
