17 to ZERO:  Communities engaging to end veteran suicide.
Virtual Event: April 17th

In the U.S., we lose 17 veterans to suicide every day. To raise awareness and honor the lives lost, MSU Veteran Services, MSU Bobcat Athletics, and the Help Center are hosting 17 to Zero:  Communities Engaging to End Veteran Suicide. Montana is home to one of the highest per capita veteran populations in the country, and a large portion of those veterans live right here in the Gallatin Valley. The goal is to bring attention and fundraise for this important issue and keep the conversation about mental health, suicide, and veteran well-being at the forefront.

This virtual event will encourage people to get out on April 17th to move their body and/or mind in the name of veteran mental health. We are also recruiting individual and team fundraisers to raise vital funds to support MSU veteran student mental health needs as well as the Help Center’s 24-Hour crisis and suicide prevention services.

Purpose & Cause

This event and fundraiser will support MSU Veteran Services & the Help Center:

MSU Veteran Services

When our student veterans face a mental health crisis, access to care and timing is crucial. When the Veteran Services Office finds out we have a student in need of mental health counseling, our staff move immediately to remove all barriers to access. Our most effective strategy is to bring our students to Counseling & Psychological Services (CPS) on campus to meet with our dedicated mental health counselor. The funding to have a dedicated mental health professional on campus saves lives through timely, effective intervention.

Help Center

The Help Center has been in Bozeman since 1971 and serves Gallatin and the surrounding 12 counties. They are available 24/7 (406-586-3333) to help anyone in crisis, suicidal or is concerned about someone in their life. They are a critical community resource, as a crisis can occur at any time. They also provide crisis walk-in services and referrals to community and mental health resources. They are one of two crisis centers in the state that answers the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK). Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Montana and Montana has remained in the top 5 states for suicide rates in the country for many years.
