988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Additional Information
In Montana and across the United States, 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK).
988 is Montana’s dedicated crisis lifeline available to anyone who may be in suicidal crisis, emotional distress, or concerned about a loved one. When people call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network of over 200 independent crisis call centers across the nation. This is not a new service, rather a new and easy way to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline instead of calling the 1-800 number.
In Montana, three independent crisis call centers serve as 988 Lifeline centers:
Montana 211 will continue to be available to help people connect to community and mental health resources, as well as in times of disaster. People can call 211 or also connect with resources on www.Montana211.org.
We kindly ask that people DO NOT call 988 just to see what it is or how it works, as this creates an immense amount of work for our amazing and hard-working crisis counselors who need to be available for those that need them. Please ONLY call if you are in crisis or in need of our services.
